DAHLONEGA, GA – The 21st-ranked North Georgia College & State University Saints came out on point in the rubber game of the weekend series against Newberry College and pulled away late for an 11-4 win to wrap up the season opening series.
Daniel Petitti had a career day at the plate, going 4-4 with a home run, six runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Petitti put the Saints on the board with a solo shot to right center, just clearing the fence and giving North Georgia a second inning 1-0 lead. Petitti pushed another run across in the fourth with double to left center, and later scored on an Andrew Jones single to give the Saints a 3-1 advantage.
John Kirkland and Phillip Bartz pulled Newberry (1-2) to within a run at 3-2 in the fifth inning on RBI singles off North Georgia starter Michael Patton. Petitti added to his big day in the bottom half of the inning with a two out single on a 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded to score Craig Brisson and Rob Flanigan for a 5-2 lead.
The Saints tacked on another run with two outs in the sixth inning, as Brisson stroked a single through the right side to bring Jones racing home for a 6-2 advantage.
Bartz doubled down the left field line in the seventh to plate two runs and cut the Saints lead to just a pair at 6-4. Bartz ended the series with three hits and four runs batted in to lead the Indians.
North Georgia came back however, and used a throwing error in eighth inning to plate a run and a single from Anders Oster to give the Saints an 8-4 lead. Petitti came through once again in the eighth, dropping a bloop single down the left field line to plate two runs and extend the lead to six at 10-4. For Petitti, he drove in his fifth and sixth runs of the day and eighth of the season to lead the team. The Saints added another run on a fielder’s choice, and shut down the Indians in the ninth for an 11-4 win.
Michael Patton (1-0) picked up the win for North Georgia, going 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Jesse Coxwell made his collegiate debut in relief of Patton and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first save.
Wayne Potts picked up the loss for the Indians, going four innings, allowing just three hits and three earned runs. Newberry threw six pitchers at the Saints in the series finale.
North Georgia (2-1) will return to action February 8-10 as they host Pfeiffer University for a weekend series.
