AUGUSTA, GA – The 25th-ranked and #4 seed North Georgia College & State University showed they belonged in their first PBC Tournament, taking care of #3 seed Francis Marion University 6-2 Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2008 Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Lake Olmestead Stadium.

Logan Sharrett broke out in the tournament opener with four hits, including two runs scored and a run batted in. Senior Chris Curtis (9-2) took the team on his back, tossing a complete game, allowing 11 hits and two runs while striking out nine Patriot batters.

North Georgia will now advance in the winners bracket to play the winner of this afternoon's game between GCSU and USC Aiken. The remainder of the Saints' games in the PBC Tournament will be played at Hernandez Stadium on the campus of USC Aiken and feature live video and statistics.

Josh Tate got North Georgia on the board in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Sharrett racing home for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, the Saints took advantage of a Patriot error and added another run for a 2-0 lead.

Francis Marion cut the Saints' lead in half in the sixth inning with a single to right field by Preston Shuey, scoring Greg Phelps to make it 2-1. After scoring a run in the sixth, Phelps would come right back in the seventh and tie the game with a two-out single through the right side to score Josh Smith and tie the game 2-2.

After the Patriots knotted the game up in the seventh, North Georgia came right back in the eighth with a pair of runs off an error and sacrifice to take a two-run lead, and in the ninth, RBI hits by Craig Brisson and Sharrett gave Curtis two more insurance runs in the 6-2 victory.
