CANTRELL AND BRISSON HEADLINE AWARDS WON BY SAINTS
Junior righthander Chris Curtis named First-Team All-PBC
SPARTANBURG, S.C . – North Georgia College & State University walked away from the annual Peach Belt Conference Tournament banquet with two of the biggest awards that are given by the Peach Belt Conference at the conclusion of the regular season.
Head coach Tom Cantrell was awarded with the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year after leading his team a 34-22 overall record, and a fourth place finish in the Peach Belt Conference with a 17-13 mark. The Saints were predicted to finish ninth in their second season of competition in the conference, but were able to use sweeps of 24th-ranked USC Upstate and Lander to jumpstart their run to fourth place. The Saints also won series over #23 Augusta State, #8 Georgia College & State University and #25 Armstrong Atlantic. The award tops a list of milestones acheived by Cantrell this season, as the head coach of the Saints recorded his 300th victory at the institution and his 500th career victory.
The Saints also won the Freshman of the Year, as outfielder Craig Brisson took home the award after hitting .360 in 55 games. The freshman from Lawrenceville led the Saints in hitting, and also led the Saints in runs (50), hits (80), on-base percentage (.444), walks (31) and stolen bases (13). He also added seven doubles, two triples, two homeruns and 27 runs batted in as the lead-off hitter for North Georgia this season. Brisson finished the season sixth in the Peach Belt Conference in hits, and also finished ninth in walks. He also won the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Award in March of this season. This is the first Freshman of the Year Award won by North Georgia since joining the Peach Belt.
Junior righthander Chris Curtis earned First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference honors for his 7-3 record and 2.25 earned run average on the season. The two-time winner of the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week led the conference in innings pitched with 100, and was in the top six in earned run average.
