TIGERS DEFEAT SAINTS 8-5
Livingston, Al. – West Alabama took its first lead of the contest in the seventh inning at 6-4, before plating two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, to hang on for an 8-5 victory over North Georgia (15-11) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, before the Tigers got on the board with one run in the third. North Georgia added a run in the fifth to extend their lead to 3-1, while UWA tied the score at 3-3 in its half of the fifth. Roy McDaniel and Clark Humber recorded back-to-back doubles, before Humber scored on an RBI single by Clint Moody.
The two teams traded runs in the sixth, and the Tigers added two in the seventh. Dustin Roberts led off with a double and later scored on a single by William Crawford. Crawford then crossed the plate on Chris Gilbertsen's RBI single. The Saints put their final run on the board in the seventh, while West Alabama took advantage of a throwing error and also singled in a run to score the final two runs in the eighth.
Matthew Creighton picked up the win in relief for UWA, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out two. Brandon Wheeler pitched the ninth, giving up only one hit, to record his fourth save of the season. Shane Martin started on the mound for West Alabama, going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out four.
Humber finished 2-for-5 at the plate for the Tigers, including a double and two RBI, while Gilbertsen went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Damon Brabson turned in a 2-for-4 performance, including a double and two runs scored, while McDaniel finished with two hits, including a double and two runs scored. Moody finished with a hit and two RBI for UWA, while Crawford and Roberto Martinez finished with one hit and one run RBI apiece.
Garrett Lussi suffered the loss for North Georgia, going two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two. Zach Black started on the mound for the Saints, lasting 4.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits, and striking out two.
Kyle Potts led the way offensively for the Saints, going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Davy Wallach went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored, while Erik Good and Brian Lauderdale drove in one run each.
The Saints will take the field again on Thursday afternoon at Tartt Field as they take on the Tigers in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
