GCSU BASEBALL COMPLETES WEEKEND SWEEP OF NORTH GEORGIA

Milledgeville, Georgia – Georgia College & State University rallied in the last inning with two outs to push across a run to claim a 5-4 victory over visiting North Georgia College and State University. GCSU completed a three game weekend sweep thanks to an 18-8 win in game one of the double header.

In the first game, GCSU (28-7, 16-5 PBC) broke open a 5-5 tie with five runs in the fifth inning and then six more in the seventh on the way to the 18-8 victory over North Georgia (26-24, 5-13 PBC). Mike DeVeaux went 3-for-5 with four RBI, while Brandon Anderson went 2-for-4 for three RBIs. Brian Lauderdale went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Josh Tate went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Saints.

Tom Bradley (5-3) took the loss for the Saints after allowing eight runs on six hits in 4.1 innings with four walks. Matt Howard picked up the win on the mound for GCSU after he allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief.

In the second game, GCSU led 4-1 heading into the seventh and final inning, but a Bobcat error kept the inning alive and the Saints would score three unearned runs, capped by Anders Oster’s RBI single, to tie the game. The Bobcats did not score in the bottom of the frame, and the Saints had two men on in the eighth, but Howard came out of the bullpen again and coaxed Tate to hit into an inning ending double play.

Giuseppe Rivas led off the last of the eighth by getting hit by a pitch and was lifted for the pinch-runner Harrell. A sacrifice and an error brought Harrell to third, and the Saints opted to load the bases to create a force play. After Justin Mills struck out for the second out, Stancil drew his mind-boggling tenth walk of the series off of reliever Garrett Lussi to drive in Harrell for the game winner in the 5-4 victory.

The Saints' second baseman, Lauderdale, continued to drive up his average as he went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Saints again at the plate.

Howard (4-0) picked up his second win of the day for the Bobcats after recording the last two outs, while Cory Gilleland (2-4) took the loss after being charged with all five runs on eight hits with six walks in 7.1 innings.

North Georgia will pick up action again on Tuesday, April 18th, as they will welcome West Georgia to town at 4 p.m.
