SAINTS BLAST 28 RUNS IN FIRST NCAA BASEBALL GAME
North Georgia Sweeps Claflin 19-0 and 9-0
Dahlonega, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University scored 28 runs off of 25 hits as they defeated visiting Claflin University in their first double header of 2006.
Today was the Saints (2-0) first battle as members of the NCAA and Peach Belt Conference. North Georgia is making the transition from NAIA competition last year to its first full season as a NCAA Division II member.
Game 1
Junior first baseman Creston Warner led North Georgia at the plate, batting a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs scored and five RBI’s. Warner also crushed the first home run of the season in the fifth inning as seven of the Saints starters got a hit and five batters posted two runs or more.
Junior starting pitcher Michael Whiting pitched five scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out four batters and allowed only one hit and no walks. For Claflin (0-4), sophomore Brandon Moody broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the fourth inning. Freshman starter Chris Martinez took the loss after going 2.0 innings of work and giving up 11 earned runs. |

Game 2
Senior second baseman Brian Lauderdale and junior third baseman Justin Rickett led North Georgia in the second game. Lauderdale hit a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Rickett tallied three RBI’s after going 2-for-3 at the plate. Warner continued his hot hitting in the ball game, going 2-for-2 and remaining a perfect 5-for-5 in the two games.
Sophomore starter Tom Bradley picked up the win after throwing five shutout innings and allowing only one hit. Junior starter Lance Miller took the loss for the Panthers in 4.2 innings of work.
The Saints will head to the Aloha State next week for a three game series against Hawaii-Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first game is on Thursday, February 9 at 4:00 p.m. (HST). North Georgia will be back home on February 22 as they take on the University of Montevallo. |
