Dahlonega, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University concluded this weekend with Barton College winning two of the three games in the series and closing the final game with a 7-3 victory.
In the bottom of the third inning, North Georgia (15-10) came alive to overpower Barton College (13-11). Bulldog pitcher Brent Godwin started off by hitting Saints Davy Wallach and Anders Oster to jumpstart the North Georgia offense. A single by senior Dusty Tate scored the first run of the game and placed runners on the corners. A follow-up single by senior Justin Rickett brought in Oster and a line drive to left by senior Ryan Gurley brought in Tate and gave the Saints a 3-0 advantage.
To start off the sixth, a deep two-run homer by Bulldog Tyler Petty brought the score to 3-2. However, Saints Kyle Potts and Wallach answered with individual home run shots of their own to negate the Bulldog’s advance. Bulldog’s relief pitcher Brandon Brinson walked Oster to continue the Saints’ offense. A single by senior Brian Lauderdale, followed by Tate and Rickett being hit by pitches rotated the loaded bases and allowed Oster to score. A sacrifice hit by Gurley brought Lauderdale in to boost North Georgia’s lead to 7-2.
A sacrifice fly by Bulldog Brandon Sneed in the top of the seventh allowed Allen Corbertt to score and bring the score to 7-3. Bulldog Brock Godwin changed positions from shortstop to pitcher and kept the Saints from scoring again. Saint freshman Garrett Lussi closed out the remaining two innings of the game with no difficulty and gave North Georgia the victory.
Saint Cory Gilleland (1-1) earned the win for the Saints improving his ERA to 4.56. Bulldog Brent Godwin (1-1) took the loss.
North Georgia will play next on the road against the University of West Alabama on Wednesday, March 15. Barton College will continue their play at USC Aiken on Tuesday, March 14.
