SAINTS CONQUER BULLDOGS 17-6

Dahlonega, Ga. –North Georgia College & State University maintains unbeaten streak at home defeating Barton College 17-6.

The Saints (14-9) had a rocky start as the Bulldogs (12-10) Friday evening jumped to an early lead with a single by Travis Holloman to right field.  Senior Brock Godwin singled later in the inning to bring Holloman in to score.  Saint senior Dusty Tate scored to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.  In the second, Bulldog Barrett Martin scored to give Barton the lead.  BC pitcher Kelly Stracke was able to keep the Saints from advancing their offense for the next two innings.

Saint junior pitcher Michael Whiting held the Bulldogs in the top of the fourth to a 2-1 lead.  Stracke loaded the bases to start the inning for the Saints.  Back-to-back walks brought in two runs to give the Saints lead.  A deep hit into left field by senior Justin Rickett allowed two Saints to score.  Senior Ryan Gurley singled to shortstop Zach Boyette and a bobbled throw to catcher Martin allowed Tate to score.  Another line drive to left by Creston Warner brought in Rickett.  David Chastain hit a sacrifice fly and a tag by Gurley gave the Saints yet another run.  The Saints end the inning with seven runs, up 8-2.

In the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded, Gurley hit a line drive to right and brought in Brian Lauderdale to score.  Kyle Potts walked to bring in Tate.  Chastain rocketed a line drive to right-center field to bring in three runs for the Saints.  Five runs scored off two hits boosted North Georgia’s lead to 13-2 to end the inning.  Barton’s Boyette hit a shot down the third base line to bring in Kevin Brosseau to score in the sixth.  Whiting maintained his composure and closed out the inning without any further damage.  Leading off for the Saints, Tate singled, then Rickett’s hit placed runners on the corners.  Gurley tapped a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Tate to score keeping the Saint’s lead at 14-3.

Starting the seventh, Saint freshman Robby Benedict retired his first two batters without any problems.  However, after walking the next two, Jonathan Nichols knocked a line drive to left-center field to bring in a run for Barton.  For the Saints, Davy Wallach singled to left followed by a double by Anders Oster to right.  Lauderdale pounded a sacrifice fly out to the warning track bringing Wallach in off a tag.  In the eighth, Bulldog Holloman tripled to right and was brought in off a single by Trey Bailey to make the score 15-5.  The Saints scored two runs as Chastain singled to center bring in Warner and Josh Tate.  The Bulldogs would not give up notching one more run in the top of the ninth off an RBI single by Brandon Sneed.

Whiting (4-2) earns the win and captures six strikeouts on the night.  The loss goes to Stracke (3-2).  The second game of the series between the Saints and Bulldogs will begin Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
