PIRATES DEFEAT SAINTS, 13-6, IN PBC OPENER

Savannah, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic scored nine runs in the first three innings en route to a 13-6 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over North Georgia in both school’s league opener at Pirate Field on Sunday afternoon.

The No. 12-ranked Pirates (9-0-1, 1-0 PBC) scored twice in the first inning off of North Georgia (7-7, 0-1 PBC) starter Michael Whiting on a wild pitch and a suicide squeeze by catcher Sean Hotzak, then chased Whiting in the second inning, putting up five runs in the frame. Right fielder Truman Marek’s two-run home run off of Saint reliever Mark Thomas in the third inning pushed the lead to 9-0.

Marek’s home run highlighted a 4-for-5 day for the Pirate right fielder, who also scored four runs and stole a base. Senior Miguel Donate contributed a 3-for-4 day with a pair of doubles, driving in three runs. The offense made a winner out of Jacob Roberson (2-0), who hurled six innings of six-hit ball, giving up just one earned run while striking out six. The Pirates and the Saints will close out their three-game PBC series with a doubleheader on Monday, February 27, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
