#14 SAINTS CRUISE TO 10-3 VICTORY OVER EAGLES
Dahlonega, Ga. – For the fifth consecutive game, 14th ranked North Georgia College & State University scored in double digits as they defeated Emory University 10-3 Tuesday night at the NGCSU Baseball Complex.
Junior designated hitter David Chastain (Canton, Ga.) led the Saints (52-12) at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored. Sophomore starter Michael Whiting (Gainesville, Ga.) held the Eagles (20-18) to only three earned runs and struck out six batters.
North Georgia broke a scoreless game in the third inning by putting four runs up on the board. Senior right fielder Richie Daigle (Alpharetta, Ga.) singled in the first run and later scored after Chastain drove in his first two runs of the game. Chastain later scored off a single by freshman center fielder Ryan Seay (Dawsonville, Ga.) to make it a 4-0 game.
In the third inning, the Saints scored three more runs to give them a seven run lead. Junior second baseman Brian Lauderdale (Roswell, Ga.) doubled to lead off the inning and later scored off of a single by senior shortstop Kevin Bulger (Snellville, Ga.). After a double by Daigle, Chastain knocked in two more runs to make the score 7-0.
The Saints picked up two more runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh as Whiting cruised with the lead. North Georgia ran into trouble in the seventh when EU senior pinch hitter Will Carr (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led off the inning with a single. A single off the bat of sophomore shortstop Brandon Custer (Overland Park, Kan.) broke up the shut out. Two batters later, senior centerfielder Josh Barrett (Racine, Wis.) doubled to left field to score two runs and cut North Georgia's lead to six.
Sophomore reliever Josh Stowe (Marietta, Ga.) came in and pitched the final two innings for the Saints and struck out five of the eight batters he faced while allowing only two hits.
The Saints will play again tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. as they host North Greenville College at the NGCSU Baseball Complex. The Eagles take to the field again tomorrow as well as they travel to LaGrange College for a game at 6:00 p.m.
