VIKINGS DOWN SAINTS 3-1 IN OPENING ROUND OF REGION XIII BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Shreveport, La. -In the opening game of the 2005 NAIA Region XIII baseball tournament, the Berry College Vikings downed the No. 1 seed North Georgia Saints, 3-1.

Berry College, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when junior catcher Britt Hubier scored from second base a on broken North Georgia double play. A bobbled catch at first base that would have ended the inning allowed Hubier to score.

The Vikings' battery helped its own cause in the top of the third with a pair of pick offs. With no outs, Hubier gunned down a North Georgia runner at second base. Pitcher Patrick Guillory picked off the next runner at first base before walking two batters.  A fly ball to shallow center field ended the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Berry mounted a serious threat, loading the bases with two outs. But a floater to the Saints' second baseman ended the inning.

North Georgia junior infielder Brian Lauderdale opened the sixth inning by reaching base on a throwing error by the Berry third baseman.  Lauderdale took second on the throw and was moved to third by the next batter.  Lauderdale tie the score at 1-1 when sophomore third baseman Justin Rickett collected a hit.  Outfielder Richie loaded the bases with two outs, but a diving catch of junior outfielder Ryan Gurley's line drive by Berry junior right fielder Jimmy Cobb ended the Saint's threat.

Berry senior center fielder Matt Norris hit a two-run homer over the right field wall in the bottom of the sixth to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead.

Berry sophomore second baseman Clayton Culpepper beat out a throw to first from third with one out in the bottom of the seventh.  Senior shortstop Tyler Driskell got a hit across second base that was bobbled by the center fielder, allowing Culpepper to go to third and Driskell to second.  But, junior Jack Cash pinch hit to the first baseman who threw back to home to double up Culpepper there and end the inning.

Berry junior pitcher Charlie Seamans walked the first two North Georgia batters in the top of the eighth before being replaced by freshman Shawn Kimberley, the Vikings' fourth pitcher of the afternoon. Kimberley dispatched the next two batters with a pop-up, strike out, but walked North Georgia freshman catcher Erik Good.  With the bases loaded, Gurley lined to Driskell to leave three runners stranded for the second time in three innings.
