What to do when your student is a High School

Freshman-

  • Visit college websites together to see which ones you find interesting.

Sophomore-

  • Continue visiting college websites together to familiarize yourself with admissions requirements.
  • Encourage your student to take the PSAT.
  • Begin to talk with your student about the type of school he or she is interested in: size, location, value, academic programs, etc.

Junior-

  • Encourage your student to meet with his or her guidance counselor to ensure graduation requirements will be met.
  • Have your student register for the SAT/ACT.
  • Begin to visit the campuses in which your student is interested.
  • Familiarize yourself with application processes, requirements, and deadlines.

Senior-

  • Start EARLY!!
  • Begin to narrow college choices.
  • Have your student apply and send in required documents and scores as soon as possible.
  • Have your student contact the colleges & universities to which he or she has applied to ensure they have received the required materials (many schools offer the option to check the status of an application online).
  • Visit campuses before helping your student make the final decision.
  • Have your student notify each school of his/her decision by May 1, providing the confirmation deposit to the first choice school, if required.  (North Georgia requires a $200 Confirmation Deposit by May 1 for students entering in the Fall semester.)
  • Make sure your student has an immunization form and final high school transcript sent to the college before orientation.
