- Why is NGCSU changing the student email service?
To offer our students better service. NIMS is no longer a Novell-supported email platform, and we have made this transition to address issues with that system.
Under the previous NetMail and NIMS systems, students at NGCSU had 15 MB of email storage space and a personal calendaring system. With the Google service, you will have 6.5 GB of email storage (over 400 times the space of the previous in-house system), integrated Google Chat for instant messaging, Google Calendars for both individual use and shared campus scheduling, and the whole host of Google applications from Google Talk to Docs, Spreadsheets, and Page Creator.
- When will the change occur?
We are in the process of making the switch throughout our system from March 3 to May 5. NIMS will no longer receive new emails as of March 10, 2008. It will still be active so that you can access any stored messages for at least six months (September 10, 2008).
- Is my email address changing?
YES - your new email address will be username@student.ngcsu.edu instead of username@ngcsu.edu. We will continue to forward email from your old @ngcsu.edu address automatically for at least six months (through at least November 5, 2008).
- What is my password?
Your temporary password in your new NGCSU Google student email account is your birth date in DDMMYY format (DAY FIRST order, e.g. 311290 for Dec 31, 1990), just like your default Banner password. Just like all passwords, this information is stored in encrypted form ONLY for log-in verification, and is not available to anyone in usable form.
-
Why Google email?
In addition to all the cool Google tools, Google Apps for Education provides students with 6.5 GB (6,500 MB) of space for free. Google also has an excellent track record for availability, and has features found in no other email system that would otherwise cost the university tens of thousands of dollars per year to maintain.
- What information is NGCSU giving Google?
No other personal information of any kind is being shared with Google – just your first and last name and account username. Your birth date, which is used for your default password in DDMMYY format, is stored ONLY in encrypted form, and is not available in plain text or useable form. No other information will be shared in any form by NGCSU with Google, and the Google Privacy Policy is available through the Start Page.
- Can I opt out of NGCSU Google student email and keep my old on-campus account?
If you opt out of the Google system, your account will be placed on the GWise server (NIMS will no longer receive email after Monday, May 5, 2008). Please email Ms. Dovie McEntire, NGCSU’s email administrator, at dlmcentire@ngcsu.edu, if you have any questions. We respect your privacy and value the opportunity to serve your technology needs.
- Will my old NGCSU email be available in my NGCSU Google student email account?
Not automatically - you can forward your old email to your Student.ngcsu.edu email account, and NIMS will be active until at least November 5, 2008 for this purpose.
