1. What is Academic Service Learning?
Academic Service Learning is a form of experiential learning, whereby students apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to address genuine community needs.
2. Who is required to complete an Academic Service Learning project?
All NGCSU education majors must complete an Academic Service Learning project before applying to the Internship (fulltime student teaching).
Types of Service Learning Requirements:
Interrelated Majors (dual certification in early childhood and special education):
Because of the varied field based experiences provided by the dual certification programs, your Academic Service Learning projects will be designed and implemented during your professional program and supervised by your college instructors.
Middle, Secondary, and P-12 Education Majors:
Complete 80 hours of Academic Service Learning on a site that is from an approved list of agencies and schools, supplied by the NGCSU Teacher Education.
For Middle Grades, Secondary, and P-12 Majors:
4. Once I have completed my Academic Service Learning project, what do I do?
To turn in your service learning log and Power Point presentation personally hand them in to Carol Croy and make an appointment. To make an appointment call 706-864-1533, allow 24 minutes for an appointment.
Submit your (minimum 10 slides) Power Point presentation to faculty member to whom your proposal was dispersed, or on a CD (PC formatted). Your project will be archived and accessible through our website.
For your presentation, answer the following questions on your *slides:
- Slide 1: Who (Your name), Where, and When
- Slides 2-5: What (Describe the setting, program, and/or activities) and how
you participated (What did you “give”?)
- Slide 6-10: Why or how did this experience impact your professional and
personal thinking as an educator? What did you gain?

5. How can I find out more about NGCSU Teacher Education Academic Service Learning Requirements and Activities?
1.You may view our Service Learning PowerPoint at the Orientation site of the Service Learning Index. 2. Also, you must attend the orientation presented in your Classroom Management class. At that time, you will be able to sign up for a project, meet with a representative, and receive the application, sign-in log, and insurance forms.
