Students who want to teach in high school seek secondary certification (grades 7-12).
North Georgia has secondary programs in English, Mathematics, History, Social Science, Biology, Chemistry
and Physics. Those students major in their academic departments. See below for their web sites. Certain other programs prepare students to teach in grades P-12. These are Art, Music,
Health & Physical Education, Spanish and French.
The common teacher education requirements for those programs are:
For admission: Area A with grades of C or better, Psyc 2103 (Human Growth &
Development—has a pre-requisite of Psych 1101), Educ 2001 & Educ 2002.
After admission: Educ 3002 (Educational Assessment—2 hrs), Educ 3003/3003L (Classroom
Management & Classroom management lab, 3 hrs). These two courses are offered fall and spring semesters and
are pre-requisite to Educ 4000. Most programs also require LART 3106, Teaching Reading in the Content
Areas, which is offered spring only.
EDUC 4000 is taken spring of the senior year. EDUC 3002 & 3003 are pre-requisite.
There will be a co-requisite course. Check with your department as to what that course is. It will take
the morning, because a school placement is also involved.
Teacher Education has a Service Learning Requirement, and additional school experience
is required.
