Masters of Art in Teaching

Program Description

The Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT) program is for individuals who possess a degree other than education and wish to become teachers. Individuals seeking admission to the MAT program must submit transcripts and G.A.C.E. II test results for review to ensure they meet the content requirements for the content field. The MAT program is structured so that individuals will focus on pedagogy and curriculum courses in the first year, a foundation necessary for teacher certification. Advanced content necessary for a masters degree will be the focus of the second year.

Program Information

Program of Study: Students in the MAT program will be required to take core courses, content courses, and endorsement courses. A program of study must be completed with an adviser before the beginning of the MAT program. A program of study is available here.

Sequence of Required Courses: The sequence of courses will be determined in consultation with an adviser. In the first semester, students are required to take three courses: 5101, 5102, 5104. One course will be delivered during the first short summer session and two courses will be delivered during the second short summer session (sequence of courses, days, and times to be determined). The third course will be delivered online. The second semester, students are required to take two courses: EDUC 5103 and LART 6300. EDUC 5103 will meet one night per week and LART 6300 will be delivered online. There is a 20-hour per week field experience requirement associated with the EDUC 5103 class. The third semester is the student's extended internship/practicum. The student is required to enroll in EDUC 5105. This class requires the student to complete a full internship experience (minimum of 40 hours per week).

Requirements

2.75 GPA
GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) minimum total or combined score of 900 or MAT (Miller Analogies Test) minimum score of 391
Pass G.A.C.E. I Basic Skills Test
Pass G.A.C.E. II Content Area (applicants for the SPED program should not take GACE II for the MAT program)

Criteria for Evaluation of Transcripts

a. No additional content is required if the applicant has a degree in the area which they seek certification or a related field (approved major field of studies are available here) - for example, one possesses a History degree seeking certification to teach History, and has completed GACE I (or the equivalent) and pedagogy and content in GACE II.

b. In consultation with an adviser, additional content courses may be required in a preferred content area prior to admission into the MAT if, for example, one possesses a Psychology degree seeking certification to teach Biology.

Admission and Application

Program size is limited to 40 students in a cohort beginning in the summer semester. Students should submit a complete application before April 1. No other admissions to the MAT program will occur in the fall or spring semesters.

Interested students applying to the MAT program are strongly encouraged to commit to two years of study in order to complete the MAT program of study in two years. Withdrawing from a course or semester will affect the availability of a course in the future.
