Application Process and Admission Requirements for a Major in Physical Education – Emphasis in Exercise Science(2008-2010 Undergraduate Bulletin)

A completed application must be submitted during the sophomore year and approved prior to admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area.  Also, a copy of your NGCSU college transcript and the notarized Criminal Background Check Consent form must be included with the application.  An unofficial or "student" transcript copy is sufficient.  It is strongly encouraged that this process be initiated as soon as possible, preferably in the spring semester of the sophomore year.  Furthermore, admission is required prior to enrollment in the following upper division classes:  PHED 3350, 3380, 3380L, 4430, 4430L, 4470, 4480, and 4490.

Copies of the “Application For Admission To Physical Education (Exercise Science)” and the “Criminal Background Check Consent Form” may be obtained from the NSCSU web page (Department of Health and Physical Education, Exercise Science), by contacting the School of Education at NGCSU at (706) 867-3271, or by contacting the Department of Health and Physical Education at (706) 864-1758.  Submit your application, current NGCSU college transcript, and the notarized criminal background check consent form to:  Mrs. Dana Turner, North Georgia College & State University, Exercise Science Admissions, Room 214 Dunlap Hall, Dahlonega, Georgia  30597.

Complete applications (accepted only once per year) will be accepted beginning January 22, 2008 and the deadline for application submission is March 14, 2008 for a Fall 2008 admittance to Exercise Science.  The Exercise Science emphasis area may close early due to reaching its maximum capacity (24 students per year) before the posted deadline.  Students will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.  After careful review, admission decisions will then be mailed to the applicant.  Those individuals not admitted initially will be placed on a waiting list based on their application submission date.  Any accepted student that does not meet the minimum prerequisite requirements will have their acceptance letter withdrawn and the first qualified applicant on the waiting list will receive a letter of acceptance.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area within the Department of Health and Physical Education, a student must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. complete 40 semester hours of credit with an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher;
   
   
2. complete all courses in Area A (Essential Skills) of the core curriculum with a grade of “C” or better (all prerequisite courses must be successfully completed no later than the conclusion of the spring semester of the sophomore year);
   
   
3. complete both BIOL 2250 and BIOL 2251 (Area F) with a grade of “C” or better (all prerequisite courses must be successfully completed no later than the conclusion of the spring semester of the sophomore year);
   
   
4. complete a request for a criminal background check (admission may be revoked if serious offenses are found);
   
   
5. complete an application for admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area at the beginning of the spring semester of the sophomore year.

Retention In Exercise Science Emphasis Area

One important aspect of the Exercise Science emphasis area is the constant vigilance exercised by the faculty involved to ensure that standards of quality are maintained.  The following standards must be maintained for continued retention in the emphasis area:

1. compliance with rules and regulations prescribed for all students at NGCSU;
   
   
2. adherence to the Code of Ethics of the Professional Practices Commission;
   
   
3. completion of all courses in the academic major with an academic grade of  “C” or better;
   
   
4. demonstration of competence in the use of oral and written language; and
   
   
5. maintenance of an overall grade point average of 2.75 as required for emphasis area admission.

Probation And Suspension

A student may be placed on probation and/or suspension if they fail to comply with the standards for retention in the Exercise Science emphasis area.  Two consecutive semesters or sessions on probation will result in suspension from the Exercise Science emphasis area.  In addition, a student will not be allowed to register for PHED 4490 (Internship:  Exercise Science) until the standards for retention in the Exercise Science emphasis area are met.  Due to the sensitive nature of working with both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals in various fitness settings (i.e., clinical, corporate, commercial, and community), this policy will be strictly enforced.

Appeals

Students denied admission to or continuance in the Exercise Science emphasis area may appeal the decision to the School of Education’s Student Admissions and Recognition Committee.  Appeals must be made in writing and should clearly state why an exception should be made.  A student must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.65 to be considered for admission.  An adverse decision by the Dean for the School of Education may be appealed in writing to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, whose decision shall be final.
