Business Administration Curriculum Updates 2006-2008

NOTE:  The changes listed on this page will be effective Fall 2006 and will be published in the 2006-2008 Undergraduate Bulletin.  The impact of these changes on current students is provided below.

General Overview of Changes

  • Change in prerequisite for BUSA 3110 Statistical Analysis effective Fall 2006

  • Change in requirements for the Marketing major;  includes some prerequisite changes as well as changes in which courses are required effective Fall 2006

  • Introduction of a Business Leadership Concentration

Specifics of each change are provided below.  Students who were admitted under the 2004 - 2006 Undergraduate Bulletin (or some earlier bulletin) should review the specific information to determine how the changes impact their requirements for registration and graduation.  In general, courses taken prior to the adopted change will be accepted under the rules in effect at the time the courses were taken; courses taken after the adoption of the new rules will be reviewed based on the newly adopted curriculum.

New Prerequisite for BUSA 3110

Effective Fall 2006 MATH 2400 (with a grade of C or better) will be the only official prerequisite for BUSA 3110.  In the past students were required to complete CSCI 1100 prior to enrolling in BUSA 3110.  Although not listed as a prerequisite, students who do not have some experience using Excel should still take CSCI 1100 prior to taking BUSA 3110.

New Marketing Major Requirements

Beginning Fall 2006, the courses required for a major in Marketing are changing.  MKTG 4720 and MKTG 4740 will be discontinued; MKTG 3740 will be required; prerequisites on several MKTG courses will change; and Marketing students will be able to select a 3000/4000 level elective as part of the major.  To view a complete description of the upper level courses required for a Marketing major click here.

Impact on current students:

The impact will depend on where a student is in the process of completing courses for the major. The table below provides a comparison of the old curriculum and the new curriculum.

For Students Planning to Graduate Fall 2006:
Sequencing of courses for Spring 2006, Summer 2006, and Fall 2006 will depend on the courses the student has already complete.  If a student has not completed MKTG 4780, the student should complete MKTG 4730 and MKTG 3730 before Fall 2006.  MKTG 4730 will be taught Spring 2006; and MKTG 3730 will be taught Spring 2006 and Summer 2006.  Students who have already completed MKTG 4720 (with a grade of C or better) may use this course as the 3000/4000 level elective in the major.  Students who have already completed MKTG 4740 (with a grade of C or better) may use this course in place of MKTG 3740.

For Students Planning to Graduate Spring 2007:  Students who have not completed MKTG 3700 and MKTG 3730 should complete these courses prior to Fall 2006 in order to allow two semesters to complete the MKTG 4730 and MKTG 4780 sequence.

New Concentration in Business Leadership

Business majors (Accounting, Finance, Management, or Marketing) interested in pursuing a “Concentration in Business Leadership” should submit a letter of intent to the Leadership Minor Advisor for Business and Government.  The letter should outline the student’s definition of leadership and demonstrate the student’s commitment to personal leadership development.  The Leadership Minor Advisor for Business and Government will work in collaboration with the Leadership Curriculum Committee to approve potential students for the Concentration in Business Leadership.

Courses taken to satisfy the concentration may be used as electives in the BBA Plan of Study.  The concentration will appear on official University transcripts.

Requirements:

  • Complete PSYC 1030 with a grade of B or better prior to applying for the concentration.

  • Have a letter of intent approved by the Leadership Minor Advisor for Business and Government.

  • Successfully complete the following nine semester hours credit in the Mike Cottrell School of Business.

  •       BUSA 3910—Business Leadership:  Theories and Processes (grade of B or better required for the concentration)

  •       BUSA 3920—Business Leadership Project (grade of B or better required for the concentration)

  •       BUSA 3995—Leadership in Business

  • Maintain a leadership portfolio that includes copies of all papers, projects, and exams from the leadership elective courses.

  • Complete degree requirements for a BBA

  • Satisfy exit requirements.  These include documentation of the previous requirements and a short essay that captures how the student’s view of leadership evolved during the program.  The essay will outline how the student plans to use the knowledge gained from the concentration in his/her business profession.

   Course Descriptions:

BUSA 3910 Business Leadership:  Theories and Processes    3 hours
Prerequisite:  PSYC 1030 with a grade of B or better.  Students will discuss and apply modern organizational leadership theories and business management and leadership practices in business cases, management scenarios, and role plays.  The course is modeled on the “leader, follower, and situation” framework adopted within many leadership models.  Students will learn how these contextual variables of leadership interact and will develop competencies and skills in dealing with each.

BUSA 3920 Business Leadership Project [R]   3 hours
Prerequisites:  Business Major and completion of BUSA 3910 with a grade of B or better.  Credit for this course is earned by creating planning, organizing, leading and controlling a specific, pre-approved project that produces a tangible outcome.  The project may benefit NGCSU, the local community, or a specific organization (profit or not-for-profit).  Credit may be earned for an internship if the internship is pre-approved for this course and the internship fully satisfies the course objectives.  Any internship used to satisfy requirements for this course may not be used to earn credit in another internship course.
