Business Administration Curriculum Updates 2004 - 2006

NOTE:  Only changes approved since the publication of the 2004 - 2006 Undergraduate Bulletin are listed on this page.  The 2004 - 2006 Undergraduate Bulletin contains a number of changes that were adopted while the 2002-2004 Undergraduate Bulletin was in effect.  Therefore, students who were admitted prior to Summer 2004 should consult the newest bulletin.  In addition, the impact of these changes on current students is addressed on the webpage describing Updates to the 2002 - 2004 Undergraduate Bulletin.

General Overview of Changes

  • Change in courses and prerequisites for the Finance major effective Summer 2004

  • Change in prerequisites for Marketing courses; effective Spring 2006 for courses with increased prerequisites; effective Spring 2005 for course with reduced prerequisite

Specifics of each change are provided below.  Students who were admitted under the 2004 - 2006 Undergraduate Bulletin (or some earlier bulletin) should review the specific information to determine how the changes impact their requirements for registration and graduation.  In general, courses taken prior to the adopted change will be accepted under the rules in effect at the time the courses were taken; courses taken after the adoption of the new rules will be reviewed based on the newly adopted curriculum.

New Finance Major Requirements

Beginning Summer 2004, the courses required for a major in Finance are changing.  FINC 3410 and FINC 3420 will be discontinued; ACCT 4370 will no longer be one of the required courses for students majoring in Finance; the prerequisites for FINC 4430 will no longer include FINC 3440; and FINC 4410 and FINC 4420 will be added to the required courses for students majoring in Finance.  To view a complete description of the upper level courses required for a Finance major click here.

Impact on current students:

The impact will depend on where a student is in the process of completing courses for the major. The table below provides a comparison of the old curriculum and the new curriculum.

Prior to
Summer 2004

Beginning Summer 2004

ACCT 4370

ACCT 4370 will no longer be in the Finance major

FINC 4430

FINC 4430 (FINC 3440 will no longer be a prerequisite)

FINC 4440

FINC 4440

FINC 4470

FINC 4470

FINC 4480

FINC 4480

ACCT 3350

ACCT 3350

FINC 3420 or
FINC 3410

FINC 3420 will be redesigned and renamed FINC 4420 (the prerequisite for FINC 4420 will be FINC 3440)
FINC 3410 and FINC 3420 will no longer be taught

FINC 4410 will be added to the required courses (the prerequisite for FINC 4410 will be FINC 3440)

For Students With a Signed Plan of Study:
Current students who have a signed (signed by the student, advisor, department head, and registrar) Plan of Study as of the end of Spring 2004 may take the courses listed on the Plan of Study if the courses continue to be taught.  Therefore, if a student has already taken FINC 3420, the course will be accepted as part of the major.  If a student has not already taken FINC 3420, FINC 4420 or FINC 4410 may be taken in its place.  If a student has ACCT 4370 on the signed Plan of Study, this course will be accepted as part of the major even if it is taken after the new program is adopted.  If a student has ACCT 4370 on the signed Plan of Study but prefers to take FINC 4410 or FINC 4420, this will be accepted.  Any substitutions require documentation from the student's advisor to the Registrar.  Therefore, students with a signed Plan of Study will need to see their advisor if they plan to include FINC 4410 or FINC 4420 in the major.

For Current Students Without a Signed Plan of Study:  Current students who did not have a signed Plan of Study as of the end of Spring 2004 will be allowed to include ACCT 4370 in the official Plan of Study if the course was taken before Summer 2004.  The same is true for FINC 3420.  ACCT 4370 taken Summer 2004 or later will be considered as a general elective for Finance majors.  Students should meet with their advisor to map out the appropriate seven courses for the major and to complete their Plan of Study.

For New Students:  New students will be expected to take FINC 4410, FINC 4420, FINC 4430, FINC 4440, FINC 4470, FINC 4480, and ACCT 3350.

New Marketing Prerequisites

To view a complete description of the upper level courses required for a Marketing major click here.  This listing includes the updated prerequisites described below.

Change in Prerequisites (Effective Spring 2005)  NOTE:  MKTG 3730 added as a prerequisite beginning Fall 2006.

MKTG 4730 Marketing Research

Prior to enrolling in MKTG 4730, students must earn grades of C or better in MKTG 3700 and MATH 2400.  Effectively, this reduces the prerequisites on MKTG 4730 for all students taking the course Spring 2005 or later.  MKTG 4730 continues to be restricted to students who have earned grades of C or better in  ACCT 2101, ACCT 2102, ECON 2105, and ECON 2106 in addition to the stated prerequisites.

Change in Prerequisites (Effective Spring 2006)

Increased prerequisites:  A revision to the Marketing Major taking effect in Fall 2006 supercedes these changes.

The prerequisites for the following Marketing courses will be in effect for all students enrolling in the identified courses Spring 2006 or later.  These courses continue to be restricted to students who have earned grades of C or better in ACCT 2101, ACCT 2102, ECON 2105, and ECON 2106 in addition to the stated prerequisites.
