Questions that arise between admission and the start of
classes | General questions
Since NGCSU only teaches the junior and senior level
courses required for the B.B.A. degree on the Gainesville State College campus,
all students enrolling in these courses will either be transferring from
another college or university or be traveling from the Dahlonega campus to
take Gainesville sections of one or more courses. This page is
intended to answer some of the more common academic questions that
prospective students tend to ask about courses taught in Gainesville.
Non-academic questions (e.g., Financial Aid, Admissions process) should be
directed to the corresponding office.

Is this the program for me:
|
|
What business degrees are available in Gainesville?
|
The Mike Cottrell School of Business offers junior and senior
level coursework leading to a B.B.A. degree (Bachelor of Business
Administration).
|
|
What majors are available?
|
Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing
|
|
Will I be able to get all of the courses that I
need for the degree in Gainesville? |
If you have already completed all freshman and sophomore
requirements for the B.B.A. degree, NGCSU does teach all of the
additional courses on the Gainesville campus. These courses
are taught in the evening. The frequency of offerings and the
number of time periods available in the evening limit the number of
courses that a student can take in a given semester. The
program is designed for students who want to take one to three
courses per semester.
|
|
Do you offer distance or on-line courses?
|
Although some of the courses do include an on-line component, all
NGCSU business courses are taught using a more traditional
approach--a faculty member meeting students face-to-face.
|
|
Are any day or Saturday classes offered in Gainesville?
|
No. NGCSU faculty teach weekdays on the main campus in
Dahlonega and Monday-Thursday evenings in Gainesville.
|
|
How do I know if the courses that I took at some other school will
transfer to NGCSU?
|
After all application materials are received by the university,
transcripts from previous schools are sent to the Office of the Registrar for evaluation.
Each course is reviewed to determine if it is transferable and, if
so, if it is equivalent to a course taught by NGCSU. Once the
evaluation is complete, a copy of the evaluation is mailed to the
student showing the corresponding NGCSU course numbers. Credit
accepted from other universities can be applied toward graduation if
the courses meet the course requirements set by NGCSU; otherwise,
the credit is considered as elective credit.
In addition, the Registrar website,
accessible through Quick Links at the top of this page, provides an
unofficial
list of transfer equivalencies. This list does not include
information for every school that a student may have attended, but
is helpful for the most common schools that have transfers to NGCSU.
In general, transfer credit from technical colleges and Associate of
Applied Science/Arts programs is limited. |
|
How do I know if I have complete all of the freshman and sophomore
level courses required by NGCSU?
|
Most of the required freshman and sophomore level courses are part
of the "Core Curriculum." For information about courses in the
Core Curriculum is available through the
Current Students
option at the top of this page.
Transfer credit from other University System of
Georgia (USG) schools is applied to the Core Curriculum according to
a "transfer articulation agreement;" transfer credit from other
universities is on a course-by-course basis. If a student
already has a degree (Associates of Arts, Associate of Science, or
Bachelors), some general statements can be made about which
requirements are met (see
Office of Registrar Advisement Notes - February 2002). |
|
How will my previous coursework "fit" in the B.B.A. program?
|
See the answer to the previous question for freshman and sophomore
level courses. For junior and senior level courses that are
transferred to NGCSU, your advisor in consultation with the
department head will determine how to apply transfer credit toward
requirements for business majors.
|
|
I want to take the courses I need to become a CPA. Can I do
this at Gainesville?
|
Complete requirements for taking the CPA exam and for becoming
licensed as a CPA in Georgia are available through the
Georgia State
Board of Accountancy. NGCSU offers 21 semester
hours of upper division accounting courses as part of the B.B.A.
with a major in Accounting. In addition, over a two year
period, NGCSU offers at least six additional semester hours of
accounting courses in Gainesville. Additional accounting
electives are available in Dahlonega.
|
|
I already have a degree in ____, can I earn a second degree in
Gainesville?
|
That depends on what the major was for the first degree and where
the degree was earned. The university requires completion of
at least 30 hours from NGCSU. In addition, the Mike Cottrell
School of Business requires that more than half of the major
specific hours and more than half of the combined Common
Professional Component and major specific courses be completed at
NGCSU. If the first degree was too closely aligned with the
proposed second degree, meeting residency requirements will not be
possible.
|
|
Do you offer an MBA?
|
NGCSU does not offer graduate level business courses
leading to the MBA degree on the Gainesville Campus. The Mike
Cottrell School of Business will begin offering an MBA program in
Forsyth County in Fall 2008.
|
|
OK, I've decided this is where I want to be, now
what:
|
|
When should I apply to NGCSU?
|
The deadline for applications is posted on the NGCSU academic
calendar (accessible through Quick Links at the top of this page).
Applications should actually be submitted well before the deadline.
Note that the deadline applies to the receipt of all necessary
materials including official transcripts from all previous schools.
Although you cannot control how quickly a school responds to your
request for transcripts, you should allowed at least three weeks.
|
|
How can I apply?
|
On-line applications are preferred. Applications are available
at the Admissions Office site, accessible through Quick Links at the
top of this page.
|
|
Is there a special application for the B.B.A. program?
|
Any student admitted to NGCSU who meets the
prerequisites for
courses can take courses taught through the Mike Cottrell School of
Business. In addition to specific courses, most upper
division business courses require the completion of ACCT 2101, ACCT
2102, ECON 2105, and ECON 2106 with grades of C or better.
Each student should declare a major (either at the
time of admission or through his/her Banner account). Advisors
are assigned based on the declared major. |
|
Is there a special application to take classes in Gainesville?
|
No, but students who plan to take all of their courses on the
Gainesville campus should make an appointment with the Gainesville
Coordinator near the beginning of their first semester. The
Gainesville Coordinator advises all B.B.A. students on the
Gainesville campus.
|
|
Questions that arise between receipt of
admissions letter and start of classes:
|
|
What is a confirmation deposit?
|
Many students apply to and are accepted by more than one school.
Confirmation deposits are becoming a fairly common way that
universities use to determine which admitted students actually plan
to enroll. This allows the university to provide better
service to students through better planning (e.g., scheduling the
right number of sections of courses). NGCSU uses confirmation
deposits for both Fall and Spring admissions. The admissions
process is not considered complete until the confirmation deposit is
received. More information about the confirmation deposit is
available at the Admissions website accessible through Quick Links
at the top of this page.
|
|
When can I register?
|
Registration times are based on a priority system. Each
student is assigned a "time-ticket" by the Office of the Registrar.
Currently enrolled students have an opportunity to pre-register
(with seniors first followed by juniors, sophomores, and finally
freshmen). Newly admitted students who attend one of NGCSU's
INTRO sessions (traditional or transfer/non-traditional), have an
opportunity to register as part of the INTRO program. Other
newly admitted students and current students who did not
pre-register are allowed to register just before classes start.
The exact date is provided on the Academic Calendar, accessible
through Quick Links at the top of this page; the date is usually the
working day prior to the start of classes.
|
|
I just received a transcript evaluation showing how NGCSU views my
previous coursework, but I don't understand it...
|
Don't panic; NGCSU provides an advisor who is available at
Gainesville State College to help you with the process!
Some information that helps is available through
the Registrar website, accessible through Quick Links at
the top of this page. The Advising Handbook under the Faculty
and Advisors option provides some help. |
|
I need advising. I don't know what to take. Where can I
get help?
|
To make an appointment to meet with Dr. Kim Melton, the Gainesville
Coordinator who serves as advisor for NGCSU students at Gainesville,
contact the Gainesville State College University Center (678-717-3875).
The best time to schedule an appointment is after the transfer
evaluation is complete and near the end of the semester prior to
enrollment.
Due to the frequency of course offerings, the focus
on helping part-time students complete their degree, and the
uniqueness that each transfer student brings to the program, it is
important to meet with an advisor soon after admission to establish
a long-term plan for taking courses.
During advisement and registration that takes place
the day before classes start students are assisted on a
first-come-first-serve basis. The advisement provided on this
day focuses on the current semester; individual appointments on some
other day are needed for establishing individual long-term plans. |
|
I was admitted for one semester, but I don't plan to come that
semester; I plan to come some later semester. Do I need to do
anything special?
|
Yes, admission decisions are for a specific semester. If you
are admitted for one semester and do not enroll, you will not be
eligible to enroll in future semesters unless you are cleared
through the Admissions Office.

General questions:
|
|
Where is Gainesville State College?
|
Gainesville State College is
located south of Gainesville in Oakwood, GA just west of I-985's
Exit 16. More detailed directions
are available through the Gainesville State College website.
|
|
Where will
my class meet? |
Room assignments are made by the
Gainesville State College
University Center and posted on the University Center website.
Most classes meet in Dunlap/Mathis building near the front of
campus.
|
|
What is the difference in a
Gainesville State College course and a NGCSU
course taught at Gainesville State College? |
Gainesville State College courses are taught by Gainesville State
College
faculty, are available to students admitted to Gainesville State
College,
are registered for through Gainesville State College's Banner system, and
require that fees be paid to Gainesville State College.
Gainesville State College does not teach junior and senior level courses needed for
the B.B.A. degree on the Gainesville State College campus.
NGCSU courses are taught by NGCSU faculty, are available to students
admitted to NGCSU, are registered for through NGCSU's Banner system,
require that fees be paid to NGCSU, but meet in facilities owned by
Gainesville State College. NGCSU does not teach freshman and
sophomore level courses needed for the B.B.A. degree on the
Gainesville State College campus.
|
|
What if I have not completed all of the freshman and sophomore level
courses that I need for the B.B.A. degree?
|
Since NGCSU only teaches junior and senior level business courses in
Gainesville, you should probably delay your plans for taking
business classes in Gainesville if you have not already completed
most of your lower division coursework--including ACCT 2101, ACCT
2102, ECON 2105, and ECON 2106 with a grade of C or better in each
course. These courses may be completed through NGCSU during
the day in Dahlonega or may be transferred to NGCSU from some other
school (subject to transfer credit evaluation).
Students who are only missing a few lower level courses may enroll
in Dahlonega sections of NGCSU courses at the same time they are
taking evening business courses at Gainesville. Other options
include taking the required course(s) as a transient student at
another school (subject to guidelines from both schools) and earning
CLEP credit for selected courses. |
|
Can I take NGCSU classes in Dahlonega and Gainesville at the same
time?
|
Yes. Gainesville sections carry a designation of GN, GNA, or
GNB. Some other departments also offer classes in Forsyth
County; these sections carry a designation of FC. There are no
special applications/registration procedures for taking sections
that are not taught at Gainesville. Note: there may be
fee implications since some fees are determined by the number and
location of the class(es).
|
|
Can I take classes from NGCSU and another college/university at the
same time?
|
There are two possibilities: joint enrollment and as a
transient student. Students who are jointly enrolled are
regularly admitted to each school and are viewed by each institution
as "their" student. Some schools do not allow this option.
Transient students are regularly admitted to one school and
specially admitted for the purpose of completing specifically
approved courses to the other school.
Both approaches require application to the other
school, registration for the course(s) at the other school based on
their guidelines, payment of fees to the other school, and may have
implication in terms of financial aid.
The "easiest" approach is to complete the work you
plan to take at one school before starting at another school--but
this is not always possible. Your advisor can help you assess
your options and help direct you to the appropriate offices for
answers to questions. |
|
How much does it cost to take classes from NGCSU?
|
To obtain information about tuition and fees, use the Site Index
link at the top of this page; then select Tuition and Fees.
Note that fees identified as applying to students taking classes on
the NGCSU campus refer to students taking classes in Dahlonega.
