The Department of Modern Languages

Welcome to the world of languages!

The Department of Modern Languages currently offers programs and coursework in six modern languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, and Spanish.

Chinese:
Fall 2007 saw the inception of a new minor in Chinese. In fall semesters, students can now take an accelerated sequence of beginning and elementary Chinese language (1001 and 1002). Both courses must be taken concurrently, for a total of 6 hours credit. In spring semesters, the sequence of 2001 & 2002 (Intermediate Chinese I and II) are offered in the same format. CHIN 3001 is offered in the fall, followed by CHIN 3002 in the spring. The University maintains an exchange agreement with Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, where students can take the additional Chinese courses they need in order to complete the minor.

French:
Students have a choice of three degree programs in French including the traditional French major, French with Teaching Certification, and French with Business Emphasis. For students interested in Study Abroad, the Department offers a French language study program in Québec City, Québec, in conjunction with the Université Laval, and Fribourg, Switzerland, in conjunction with the Université de Fribourg. High school students with two years of French study can apply to Joint-Enrollment Study Abroad program in Toulouse, France, and receive six hours of NGCSU credit in advanced French. A French minor is also available.

German:
Fall 2007 saw the return of the German minor from the hiatus under which it was placed in 2000. The Department provides on-campus instruction in beginning, elementary, and intermediate-level German, as well as 2 courses of advanced-level study. It also offers study-abroad opportunities in Germany, such as a five-week program in Bonn, Germany, where students can take a variety of courses taught by faculty of the University System of Georgia, and a 4-week Advanced German Language course in Paderborn, in which students can complete the courses they need for the minor.

Spanish:
The Department maintains three degree programs in Spanish: the traditional Spanish major, Spanish with Teaching Certification, and Spanish with Business Emphasis. For students interested in Study Abroad, the Department offers a Spanish language study program in Nerja and Santander, Spain, in conjunction with the Escuela de Idiomas and the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo. Semester and academic-year-long programs are available through the GRIIS (Granada Institute of International Studies) in Granada, Spain. A Spanish minor is also available.

Arabic and Korean:
Under the auspices of NASILP (National Association of Self-Instructional Language Programs), the Department initiated a pilot program in Arabic and Korean in the fall of 2007. Students should be aware that this program does not constitute an offering of classes, but rather a coordinated system of independent study that is structured by native-speaker/facilitators and external examiners for each language.
