The Department of Modern Languages

Note that as of 7/1/2006, the Department of Language & Literature has become two separate departments; English and Modern Languages. While awaiting the administrative changes that will reconcile this with the structure of the NGCSU website, interested parties can access program websites from this page.

Welcome to the world of languages!

See the new Gender Studies Minor website here!

The Department of Modern Languages offers programs and coursework in four modern languages: Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.

Chinese:
Starting in the Fall of 2006, students can take an accelerated sequence of beginning and elementary Chinese language (1001 and 1002). Both courses must be taken concurrently, for a total of 6 hours credit. In the Spring of 2007, the sequence of 2001 & 2002 (Intermediate Chinese I and II) will be offered in the same format. The University has recently signed a student exchange agreement with Tsinghua University in China to offer study abroad courses, and Plans are in the works to offer a minor in Chinese as early as Fall 2007.

French:
Students have a choice of three degree programs in French including the traditional French major, French with Teaching Certification, and French with Business Emphasis. For students interested in Study Abroad, the Department offers a French language study program in Québec City, Québec, in conjunction with the Université Laval. High school students with two years of French study can apply to Joint-Enrollment Study Abroad program in Toulouse, France, and receive six hours of NGCSU credit in advanced French. A French minor is also available.

German:
The Department of Language & Literature offers instruction in beginning, elementary, and intermediate-level German, and offers a study-abroad opportunity in Germany trough the European Council.

Spanish:
The Department maintains three degree programs in Spanish: the traditional Spanish major, Spanish with Teaching Certification, and Spanish with Business Emphasis. For students interested in Study Abroad, the Department offers a Spanish language study program in Nerja and Santander, Spain, in conjunction with the Escuela de Idiomas and the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo. A Spanish minor is also available.
