The Department of Language and Literature at North Georgia College and State University sponsors a summer study-abroad program in collaboration with Ms. Deborah Riedmiller, Foreign Language Coordinator for the Atlanta Public Schools.  Ms. Riedmiller began the program in 1985, and the program has been sponsored by the NGCSU since 1993.  Dr. Mann began working with the program in the fall of 1999.

Our program is unique in that it is offers full-time intensive academic study, joint-enrollment credit, a home-stay, and a student exchange.  There is no other program like it in the country.  Students who have had two or more years of high-school French, are 16 years of age, and meet NGCSU joint-enrollment requirements receive six semester hours college credit at the elementary and/or intermediate levels as well as high-school credit in French. These requirements include SAT or ACT scores and a G.P.A. sufficient for admission to NGCSU. These exact numbers vary from year to year. Those who are not accepted for NGCSU credit can still participate in the program and, if their high school offers it for summer programs still receive their high-school credit.  Everyone participates in the experience of a lifetime!

The American students spend most of June and the first part of July in Toulouse, and are hosted by French families.  Upon their return to the U.S., the American students then host a French student from Toulouse (usually the one with whom they stayed in Toulouse) for three weeks in July.  The American students attend class five to six hours a day at the Lycée Montalembert, and are normally taught by NGCSU faculty, Ms. Riedmiller, and another American teacher.  They will also get to know native French instructors from the lycée.  The program also includes excursions in the surrounding area, including trips to such attractions as Carcassonne, Albi, a Cathar castle, or other sites, with both French and American teachers in attendance.  The program concludes with a vacation stay of 3 or 4 days in Paris before returning to Atlanta.

For 2006, the projected program cost is $3,500.00,* which includes everything except the college application fee ($25.00), fees for travel documentation (passport, etc.), personal spending money, and transportation to and from the Atlanta airport. All the details are discussed at the orientation meetings, which normally begin in the fall and continue until May.

*The projected program cost assumes participation by enough students to qualify for a group travel rate, as well as relatively stable exchange rates, airline ticket & ground transportation prices, etc. The program directors reserve the right to adjust the program cost in response to these exigencies.
