Morphology/Syntax: 

• French 1001: Structure of a simple sentence (no more than one conjugated verb): subject pronouns, stressed pronouns; noun markers such as articles (definite, indefinite, partitive) and their contractions; adjectives (pre- & post-nominal adjectives, regular feminine and plural adjectives, possessive, interrogative and demonstrative adjectives).

Verbs: Conjugation of regular verbs in -er + -er verbs with spelling changes, -ir, re + irregular verbs such as être, avoir, faire, aller, prendre, venir, sortir, partir, dormir. The tenses presented in addition to the present are: passé composé, near future, imperative.

• French 1002: Structure of a complex sentence ( more than one conjugated verb): relative pronouns & object pronouns, and conjunctions are presented.

Verb tenses and moods include the imparfait, future, conditional, subjonctif, and present participle .

Vocabulary: 

• 1001: very concrete, it deals with daily life: greetings., weather, colors, numbers, lodging & furniture, leisure activities, food, budget, student life, etc. All vocabulary is presented in a cultural context.

• 1002: going beyond the description of daily life, it includes expressions used to give opinions, express view points, wishes and desires.

Culture: 

• 1001/1002: Observations of daily life patterns, comparisons with the USA, survey of "francophonie,"discovery of the past.

Reading: 

• 1001/1002: reading for gist or main idea, scanning for specific information. The texts presented are either short, edited texts or authentic materials whose format gives clues to meaning; e.g., menus, schedules, announcements.

Writing: 

• 1001/1002: answering questions, some description of visuals, guided narrations.

Aural comprehension: 

• 1001/1002: supported with visuals, listening for gist or main ideas, selective listening e.g., listening for cues to time, place, etc...

Oral proficiency: 

• 1001: minimal comprehension and production except for learned words and sentences, repetition of familiar elements with small variations; short answers to personalized questions are expected.

• 1002: sharing personal information: personalized questions, information sharing, role-playing, interviews. Paraphrasing to compensate for unknown vocabulary. Able to describe, starting to narrate in both present and past.
