Below you will find NGCSU course numbers and descriptions, followed
by descriptive summaries of the types of coursses offered by the
Laval faculty. The Laval courses you take will be regrouped under
the NGCSU course numbers and entered on your NGCSU transcript, later to
be transferred to your own university. (The program Director
takes
care of all the details.)
All students on the NGCSU Quebec French Summer Study Program
participate
in the full six-week program, the first week of which is spent in a
combination
orientation period/introductory course on Quebec Culture and
Civilization.
Students placing at the intermediate level receive credit for the first
week’s course (enrolling for 9 semester hours); students placing
below the intermediate level enroll for 6 semester hours.
Graduate
enrollment is for 6 semester hours. See the FACTSHEET on this
site
for additional details on placement and credit.
Students must consult with their academic advisor on their own home campuses before enrolling in the program.
Week 1 – The entire Georgia group attends a course with the program director during the morning for 4 hours each day on Quebec history and civilization during the morning for 4 hours. There are visits during the afternoon. (This is also a period of orientation to the campus and the city, as well as a period of adjustment in your host(s).)
Only those students who have completed at least one intermediate level French course before arriving in Quebec are eligible to enroll in this course for credit (giving them a total of 9 semester hours). Those having had at least one intermediate course and who can write an essay-type exam take the course for upper-level credit. Those who have had one intermediate course but who are unable to write an essay-type exam take the course for intermediate level credit.
There is an exam at the end of week one in the culture and
civilization course,
and it varies according to the level of the student. Students taking
the Quebec Culture & Civilization course for 2000-level credit will
take a shorter, objective type test. Those signing up for
3000-level credit will also do an essay-type exam.
During weeks two through six, students taking the Quebec Culture
& Civilization course for 2000-level credit will do additional
readings, attend
conversation workship, and do field projects involving language
use. Those takeng the course for 3000-level credit will continue
reading the text book,
used in the course, do additonal readings, participate in conversation
workshops, and do field projects involving language use.
Students at the elementary level receive no credit for the course but profit from the experience, since it will provide a framework for understanding the culture in which they will be living for six weeks. It also helps to build listening skills. For more information on enrollment for credit for the civilisation course please see the FACTSHEET on this site.
Weeks 2 through 6 – Taught by Laval University professors.
Approximately
four hours of class per day, normally in the morning. Each
student
will sign up for 6 credits on the Laval University system.
The program director will regroup these credits and return them to the
University System of Georgia (and to your own school) through North
Georgia
College & State University course numbers. The courses listed
below are expected to be taught, but offerings are dependant on
enrollment and North Georgia College & State Unviersity does not
guarantee all courses will be offered. If you need a specific
course, please discuss with the program director.
